Open water swimming at Alderford Lake
There are many excellent venues for open water swimming around Cheshire, including Manley Mere, Pickmere, Hatchmere, the River Dee and just over into Shropshire near Whitchurch, is Alderford lake.
There aren't many better places to go than Alderford Lake if you fancy getting into open water swimming. It's a picturesque site with a nice walk around the lake, includes eating facilities, and at the weekend there are local businesses pitching up at the market. You can also hire equipment there.
The swimming itself is great as it's a large lake with some nice gentle entry points. It's also big enough to be interesting, with a few islands in the middle packed at as the well suited name implies, Alder trees. On a summers day it gets quite busy, but the water itself is nowhere near too busy even on the best days. The main advice is to arrive early in the summer, as closer to lunch there tends to be a queue to get in.
The other good thing about the facility is the surrounding countryside, making it ideal to turn a swim into a triathlon session with a bike ride and/or a jog around the lake.
Overall a recommended place to take the family, even if just for a paddle and a walk.
